Ephesus, Turkey

One of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world, and a straight line back to the New Testament — Paul preached here.

The ancient Library of Celsus at Ephesus

Why I Love It

Reading Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is one thing. Standing in the actual amphitheater where the silversmiths’ riot against him broke out — the one Acts 19 describes in detail — is another. Ephesus is the rare ancient site where the biblical account and the physical place still line up stone for stone.

Most travelers see it as a single, unforgettable shore excursion on a Mediterranean or Greek Isles cruise rather than a standalone trip — a few intense hours that end up being the itinerary’s most talked-about day.

Highlights

  • The Library of Celsus facade
  • The Great Theatre, where Paul’s riot happened (Acts 19)
  • The House of the Virgin Mary nearby
  • Usually reached via a Mediterranean or Greek Isles cruise stop

Best time to go: Spring and fall cruise season; the site has almost no shade in summer

Good for: Faith-based groups and cruisers with a biblical-history focus
